Minister of Science visits NOVA LINCS

31-07-2018

"A very good experience! For those who enjoy science, it’s a way of seeing how things work. And for those who do not have much to do on summer holidays, it’s a good way to spend their time learning something useful" says Leonor, age 14, student from the eighth grade at Olivais Secondary School.

The young students who, during this week, attended the internships program “Ciência Viva no Laboratório” of the Department of Informatics of FCT NOVA and NOVA LINCS NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics, under the program Ciência Viva no Laboratório, received today the visit of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, the President of the Agency Ciência Viva, Rosalia Vargas, and delegation.

This year we presented as a novelty the "Starting Early (computer programing)" internship for students in the 3rd cycle of Basic Education, through the pilot program Starting Early, under the motto "A program of internships with a duration of one week, entirely vocation for Digital Technologies and Skills framed by responsible practices for scientific research and innovation, such as gender parity. "

The "Starting early computer programing" internship is an introduction to the various areas of computing by building programs. The 8th and 9th grade students had the opportunity to explain and demonstrate to all the delegation that accompanied the Minister, everything they learned during this internship, from small computer games, to artificial intelligence, robotics, internet of things and computer security, a different theme every day.

NOVA LINCS and DI FCT NOVA have been offered internships to groups of secondary school students for a week during summer holidays to understand the principles of Informatics and Computer Science applied to the construction of a real computer game.

The activity had the participation of researchers and postdocs from NOVA LINCS, as well as numerous professors and students of master's and PhD programs from the Department Informatics of FCT NOVA.

The program “Ciência Viva no Laboratório – Ocupação Científica de Jovens nas Férias” aims to bring the youngest students closer to the reality of scientific and technological research in several areas of knowledge.
