FCT NOVA is a pioneer institution in the teaching of Computer Science and Engineering in Portugal. The courses offered are based on the long-standing experience of the Department of Computer Science at FCT NOVA, accumulated over more than 40 years in the field of Computer Science and Engineering education. This experience is complemented by input from external advisors and reflects an up-to-date vision of the training of a design-focused Engineer in Computer Science.
Starting in the academic year 2021/22, the Department of Computer Science at FCT NOVA offers new students an education inComputer Science and Engineering through LEI – Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and Engineering and MEI – Master's Degree in Computer Science and Engineering, corresponding to the 1st cycle (3 years) and 2nd cycle (2 years) of university education as defined by the Bologna Process.
The MIEI – Integrated Master's in Computer Science and Engineering, an integrated study cycle (3+2 years), will continue to operate for students who are already enrolled in it.
The education provided, whether through the combination of LEI and MEI or through the MIEI, is aimed at training design-focused Engineers capable of working in the fields of Computer Science and Information Technologies.
There are numerous career opportunities available to graduates of our Computer Science and Engineering programs. Integration into the job market is facilitated through specific course units that promote student involvement in activities in collaboration with companies and other external institutions.
The Bachelor Degree in Computer Science and Engineering is a 1st cycle course, lasting 3 years, that offers a coherent and comprehensive foundational education in Computer Science and Engineering. This education can later be deepened at the second cycle level.
The program allows for entry into professional activity compatible with the E1 qualification level of the Portuguese Guild of Engineers.
The Master's Degree in Computer Science and Engineering is a two-year 2nd cycle of studies aimed at training Engineers qualified to intervene in the areas of Computer Science and Information Technologies, compatible with the Bologna principles.
The flexible course structure of NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA allows to combine courses according to students' interests, guaranteeing a solid advanced training, complemented by specialization in one or more areas.
With full employability, IT Engineers at NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA hold leadership positions in leading companies in the areas of Information and Communication Technologies, developing careers with recognized international projection and creating innovative companies that operate in the global market.
The Master's Degree in Analysis and Engineering of Big Data (MAEBD) aims to train specialists at the level of a 2nd cycle of studies in the emerging field of Data Science and Data Engineering, and is intended for candidates with a background at the level of a 1st cycle of studies including coverage of mathematical and programming fundamentals.
The course develops competencies on techniques and methods for processing and analysis of large volumes of data by advanced computational and mathematical methods, and methodologies to seek and find necessary answers to management, monitoring and optimization processes, or extract knowledge, trends, correlations, or predictions, in particular building on machine learning.
The goals of the course are aligned with the "National Digital Competence Initiative e.2030", in the areas of specialisation (item qualification and creation of added value in economics) and research (big data item).
The Integrated Master in Computer Science and Engineering (MIEI) is a 3+2 year integrated program (shaped after the Bologna model and the FCT UNL Curricular profile). The MIEI targets the education of conception level engineers able to act in the fields of IT, Computer Science, and related areas. The MIEI at NOVA is an excellent route to a high-performing career in the informatics industry.
In July 2017, after an evaluation by the National Engineering Council (Ordem dos Engenheiros), the program received the quality stamp EUR-ACE® ; this certification is awarded by the ENAEE (European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education) and is valid for 6 years.
Following the Portuguese legislation, the Integrated Master in Computer Science and Engineering stopped accepting candidates in 2021/22 and was replaced by the Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Computer Science and Engineering.
The PhD Program in Computer Science is a research degree programme that will challenge and help you to develop your potential to pursue scientific research, innovation, and leadership activities in fields of Computer Science and Informatics. The PhD Program is articulated with the research activities of NOVA LINCS, the research unit of the Department.
