25% of new students in MIEI are young women

09-11-2015

Computer Engineering attracts more and more female student candidates, in Portugal and Internationally, moving towards a gender balance in this relevant professional area, and breaking unfounded myths and stereotypes.

The contribution of both genders to Computer Engineering and IT is well recognized in Industry, traditionally seen as preferred by male students.

Recently, Susan Wojcicki (YouTube), encouraged female participation in IT, while Lesley Chicott, awarded film director, is launching her most recent documentary, CodeGirl.  Moreover, the historic relevance of women in this scientific area is well known, with original contributions developed by women (Women in Computing, Wikipedia).

Today, most top computing universities dedicate space of their online presence to the role of women in computing and IT (women@cs-CMU; WCS@Illinois).

This school year, in the Informatics Department of NOVA, 25% of the 170 new MIEI students are young women.  In comparison with previous years, the proportion of young women new students in MIEI has more than doubled.

The Informatics Department welcomes our new women students (as well as young men)!
